The Fort Smith Southside High School Wind Symphony and Chamber Music Ensembles are working hard preparing for the Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra, and Music Conference. The Midwest Clinic will take place December 18th through the 21st in Chicago, Illinois. More than 18,000 composers, musicians, educators, and students from all 50 states and more than 30 countries, will be in attendance.
Southside was invited by the Midwest Board of Directors to be a demonstration band in a clinic and also invited us to showcase our chamber music ensembles.
The Wind Symphony will be a demonstration group for the clinic "Tuning with Technology" presented by Jordan Stern and John Denis of Texas State University. At this clinic we will perform "Arabesque" by Samuel Hazo and "Children of the Regiment" march by Julius Fucik. Dr. Richard Crain will guest conduct the march.
The Southside Band also have six chamber ensembles performing:
The Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Tommy Dobbs – Director. The ensemble will perform "Stinkin’ Garbage" by Ed Argenziano, "Shock Factor" by Nathan Daughtrey , and "Smooth Criminal" arranged by Jackson/Ball.
The Trumpet Ensemble is directed by Keith Wood. The ensemble will preform "Concert Fanfare" by Eric Ewazen, "O Tannenbaum" by Anschutz/Olcott, and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Matin/Blane/Chidester.
The Horn Ensemble is under the direction of Evan Mino. the ensemble will preform "Quartet No. 1" by Franz Strauss, "Three Christmas Carols: I. Ding Dong! Merrily on High! II. Away in a Manger III. We Wish You a Merry Christmas" arranged by Roger Ballenger
The Flute Ensemble is directed by Virginia Hudson. The ensemble will preform "A Gaelic Offering: I. Rose Cottage II. The Doubtful Wife" by Catherine McMichael, "Night Soliloquy" by Kent Kennan, and "Carol of the Bells" by Mykola Leontovych.
The Saxophone Ensemble is under the direction of Michael Westbrook the ensemble will preform "Rhosmedrye" by Vaughan Williams/Westbrook, "Gold Rush Suite: I. Sweet Betsy from Pike II. The Days of ‘49" by Jack Marshall, and "Three Traditional Christmas Songs" by Lloyd Conley.
The Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble is directed by Jay Shepherd. the ensemble will preform "I’ll Love My Love" by Holst/Carroll, "The Washington Post" by Sousa/Sauborin, "I Don’t Know How to Love Him" by Webber/Rice/Shepherd, and "Beer Barrel Polka" by Vejvoda/Forbes.
The Southside Band held a preview night for their ensembles on December 6th and the Wind Symphony previewed their pieces on December Monday December 9th during their Christmas Concert.
